About Our Program

inSTEM (Inspiring STEM in Girls) is a STEM program that builds on the fundamentals of the Young People’s Project (YPP) for mathematics literacy. The purpose of the inSTEM program is to provide middle school girls, in low-income Chicago Public Schools (CPS), unique opportunities to engage in STEM activities. These experiences include real-world investigations, problem solving, and technology integration, all designed to enhance students’ mathematics and science content knowledge and promote students’ interest and confidence in advanced education and STEM careers. inSTEM has improved students’ perceptions of their skills and abilities to be successful students and leaders in Math, Science, and Technology studies. These results can be seen across a variety of metrics including last year’s 6th grade participants requested to come back as rising 7th grade students, the parents indicated overwhelming satisfaction with their child’s enthusiasm for learning, and in the continued enthusiasm the mentors have shown during the academic year in their continued work with the YPP program.

The Inspiration behind inSTEM

Inspired by the growing awareness of the under-representation of women in science, technology, engineering and math-related careers, three DePaul professors came together to create a two-week camp for middle-school girls which featured projects and experiments, each incorporating elements of math and science. The students were recruited from different areas of low-income Chicago Public Schools.

DePaul's College of Education first launched inSTEM in 2014 with the generous help from the Motorola Solutions Foundation Innovation Generation Grant.
