This was DePaul University's second year adding 8th grade campers into our Inspiring STEM in girls summer program.
Our camp evolves around the concept of building and bridging campers learning experiences at each grade level. This year, we added a new component, bringing back mentors who have attended all 4 years of our InSTEM program. Two past members from our InSTEM progra, Annika B. and Alicia Kim, were given the opportunity to bridge their mentor training from last week and coding concepts knowledge from last year and mentor training were at the forefront this year. Mentors helped facilitated and mentored our middle school girls in learning computer programming through the use of Dr. Racket Programming Software. Each day, the campers were introduced an engagement activity that lend itself in the elaboration and explanation of concepts related to geometric shapes, lines, overlaying, functions and commands. In addition, the campers were able to tie mathematical concepts (linear function, quadratic function, circle evaluation, etc.) and turn the mathematical expressions into code. Each camper successfully created their own program and picture with the guidance of MLWs and Coding Instructor, Thanh Nguyen (Terri). |
